Why choose counselling ?
People choose counselling for a variety of reasons. Sometimes life does not work out the way we expected or hoped. Changes throughout life are inevitable and can occur with no prior warning.
Relationship endings, bereavement, unemployment, work and other stress related daily events can sometimes lead us to experiencing and displaying emotions and behaviours we have not experienced before.
These can range from feeling hurt, angry, resentment, leading to depression, avoidance of accepting these changes to displaying compulsive or addictive tendencies.
To manage these behaviours in a positive way we have to acknowledge and understand them.
How will counselling work for You?
Counselling works by enabling you to explore issues which are causing you concern and distress.Whether you seek individual or couple / relationships counselling I offer a 'safe' place where you can just 'be'.
Relationship counselling covers all relationship issues, including spouse & partner and parent & child.
A place where we can work at 'your' pace with no pressure.
Imagine yourself as a disco 'glitterball' As it spins different segments are displayed, the hidden segments are also part of the glitterball. This is like ourselves, sometimes we show certain aspects of ourselves to our family, friends and colleagues, and keep other aspects hidden. We may not like some of the hidden parts and may not want to acknowledge these, however when we do, we find we are able to work towards accepting these and find ways of managing and moving forwards.
How we will work together
I find that a 'one cap fits all' approach does not achieve the best results, therefore I offer a variety of therapeutic methods. These include; Talking Therapy, Creative Therapy using Art / Buttons, Shells & Pebbles alongside Dream Work / Visualization and Relaxation Techniques.
I offer a confidential and empathic service which is tailored around 'your' needs.
I will explain a little about the approaches I offer showing how these can work in conjunction with 1-1 talking therapy.
EMDR (Eye Movement, Desensitization & Reprocessing)
When we experience trauma in our lives, which maybe around a road traffic accident, personal / industrial injury, survivor of abuse etc. part of our brain helps to 'cope' with the trauma by 'shutting itself down' to what has happened. If we think of the 'Fight, Flight or Freeze' expression, if we cannot fight or run away from what is happening we 'freeze'. This information is then stored sub-consciously, however may impact upon our everyday lives.
For example, if we have been a survivor of abuse, our 'conscious' mind may have a negative cognition of feeling 'I am not in control'. If we then let our mind float back to other events in our lives, we may find we have had other situations where we have felt 'not in control'.
EMDR works by processing the negative cognition by desentizing this belief and then reprocessina new belief into a positive cognition, for example, I am in control'.
EMDR is effective in the management of pain and ME / Chronic Fatique Syndrome, fears and phobias
Creative Therapy using works by enabling you to see things as a 'visual' as opposed to just experiencing the emotions.
Example case study - Button Therapy - Client X
Client X was having relationship problems with Client X's partner. Client X chose a small button to represent self and a large button to represent the partner. When Client X was asked about the relationship, Client X placed the partner's large button on top of Client X's small button.
It wasn't until this point that Client X realised how trapped Client X felt within the relationship and how Client X had completely disappeared under Client X's partner's button.
This enabled Client X to see the relationship as a 'visual' and explore feelings of isolation and loneliness.
Over the course of the counselling sessions Client X worked with the buttons and was able to see own progress as the button for Client X changed to a larger button and the button for Client X's partner became smaller.
The use of buttons / shells & pebbles within therapy can help with a large range of issues including depression, anxiety, guilt and relationships issues.
The use of Art within therapy works in a similar way, by expressing through pictures and colours around how you are feeling.
Visualization can be a useful aid into dealing with issues around unresolved issues from your younger life and explores the 'inner child' and 'inner teenager' within the adult mind.
Dream Work is around exploring what you unconscious mind is trying to tell you through your dreams. When we don't understand the messages through dreams or ignore what they are trying to tell us, we find that we may have many different dreams yet with the same message trying to be heard. By working 'with' the dreams and understanding their meanings we will find both the dreams and ourselves move forwards.
Making the right choice for 'YOU'
Making the decision to access counselling can sometimes be a difficult decision to make. It is therefore important that it is 'Your Choice' that it is something you wish to do, and to be aware that sensitive issues are likely to arise. This is all part of the healing process and we will work together through these issues in a 'safe' space, enabling you to deal with and overcome some of the barriers which hinder your daily life.
If you require couples / relationship counselling I will meet with you both. to listen and gain understanding of your needs and concerns. We will then work together to explore ways to enable you both to move forwards.
If you are unsure if counselling is for you I am happy to speak with you to discuss your needs and expectations, to enable you to make a fully informed choice.
